Some cosmetic ingredients are controversial, overused, or simply not aligned with sensitive-skin care. Here’s our plain‑language guide to 14 categories we don’t use at Mediterranean Bloom—what they are, why people avoid them, where they usually show up, and what we choose instead.

  1. Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, butylparaben, etc.)

·        What they are: Common preservatives used to prevent mold and bacteria.

·        Why people avoid them: Ongoing debate about potential hormone‑disruption; many consumers prefer paraben‑free products.

·        Where they show up: Lotions, shampoo, makeup.

·        What we use instead: Phenoxyethanol + ethylhexylglycerin (Optiphen) with chelation and pH control—effective, widely accepted, and friendly to sensitive routines.

2.Phthalates (often hidden in “fragrance”)

·        What they are: Plasticizers and fragrance fixatives.

·        Why people avoid them: Endocrine and developmental concerns; often undisclosed in generic “fragrance.”

·        Where they show up: Scented products, nail and hair products.

·        What we use instead: Either fragrance‑free or essential‑oil–based aroma at very low levels with allergen disclosure; no added phthalates.

3. Formaldehyde‑releasing preservatives (DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl/diazolidinyl urea, quaternium‑15, bronopol)

·        What they are: Preservatives that can slowly release formaldehyde.

·        Why people avoid them: Known sensitizers; higher allergy risk.

·        Where they show up: Shampoos, conditioners, lotions.

·        What we use instead: Non‑releasing systems (Optiphen) and hygienic packaging.

4. MIT/MCI (methylisothiazolinone/methylchloroisothiazolinone)

·        Why people avoid them: High rates of contact allergy; restricted in many regions.

·        Where they show up: Wipes, wash‑offs, some leave‑ons.

·        What we use instead: Optiphen + chelator; no isothiazolinones.

5.Oxybenzone and certain older chemical UV filters (e.g., octinoxate, PABA, padimate O)

·        What they are: UV filters used in some sunscreens.

·        Why people avoid them: Irritation/endocrine debates and environmental concerns.

·        Where they show up: Sunscreens, SPF makeup.

·        What we use instead: We don’t sell sunscreens. We educate on daily SPF and pair our after‑sun care with mineral or gentle filters from trusted brands.

6. PFAS (“forever chemicals” like PTFE, perfluoro‑ compounds)

·        What they are: Fluorinated compounds used for slip and long wear.

·        Why people avoid them: Environmental persistence and potential health concerns.

·        Where they show up: Long‑wear, waterproof makeup.

·        What we use instead: Plant oils, butters, and squalane for slip; no PFAS.

7.1,4‑Dioxane (process contaminant)

·        What it is: A by‑product from “ethoxylation”; not intentionally added and not listed on labels.

·        Where it shows up: Products with “-eth” surfactants (laureth), PEGs, “ceteareth/oleth.”

·        What we use instead: We avoid ethoxylated surfactants in leave‑ons and choose simpler emulsifiers and oils.

8.Ethanolamines (DEA/MEA/TEA, cocamide DEA, etc.)

·        What they are: pH adjusters/foaming agents.

·        Why people avoid them: Can form nitrosamines under certain conditions; irritation potential.

·        Where they show up: Shampoos, cleansers, hair products.

·        What we use instead: Gentle, olive‑derived emulsifiers and modern surfactants; citrate systems for pH.

9.Triclosan (and triclocarban)

·        What they are: Antibacterial agents.

·        Why people avoid them: Resistance and endocrine‑concern discussions; restricted in several categories.

·        Where they show up: Some soaps and deodorants (less common now).

·        What we use instead: Proper preservation, clean manufacturing, and routine hygiene—no antibacterial drug actives.

10.Coal‑tar dyes and PPD (p‑phenylenediamine)

·        What they are: Synthetic colorants; PPD is a common hair‑dye base.

·        Why people avoid them: Allergy and sensitization concerns.

·        Where they show up: Hair dye, some color cosmetics.

·        What we use instead: We don’t formulate with these color systems.

11.Talc (impurity concerns in loose powders)

·        What we use instead: Xanthan, cellulose gums, and lipid structuring.

13.Petrolatum/mineral oil (poorly refined grades)

·        What it is: Hydrocarbon occlusives; risk is impurity control.

·        Why people avoid it: Concern about PAH contaminants in non‑USP grades; heavy feel.

·        Where it shows up: Ointments, balms.

·        What we use instead: Olive oil, shea/mango butters, squalane—plant‑derived occlusives with a breathable feel.

14.Undisclosed “Fragrance/Parfum” (lack of transparency)

·        What it is: A catch‑all that can include dozens of components.

·        Why people avoid it: Hidden sensitizers and phthalates; hard for sensitive users to evaluate.

·        Where it shows up: Nearly all scented products.

·        What we use instead: Fragrance‑free primary formulas. If we add scent, we disclose “fragrance from essential oils” and list common allergens (e.g., linalool, limonene). Sensitive‑skin options always available.

  • Does “don’t use” mean these are illegal? No. Many are permitted at certain levels. We choose alternatives to align with sensitive‑skin needs and our transparency promise.

  • Are your products preservative‑free? No. Water‑based products must be preserved for safety. We use modern systems (e.g., phenoxyethanol + ethylhexylglycerin) with chelation and pH control.

  • Are essential oils “clean”? Essential oils are natural aroma sources but can be sensitizing. That’s why our core line is fragrance‑free, and any scented variants are clearly labeled with allergens and used at very low levels.
